The Power of Coaching in Modern Leadership Landscape

The Power of Coaching in Modern Leadership Landscape

In today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving business world, leadership isn’t just about making decisions—it’s about unlocking potential. That’s where coaching comes in.

Coaching isn’t a luxury for leaders; it’s a necessity.

It bridges the gap between where you are and where you aspire to be.

For CXOs and leaders, coaching provides a safe space to reflect, grow, and align their vision with action.

Here’s a powerful insight: According to a recent study, 70% of executives who received coaching reported improved work performance, stronger communication skills, and enhanced leadership effectiveness.

Example from my coaching diary: I once worked with a CXO struggling to inspire their team during a challenging transition.

Through coaching, they discovered how to communicate their vision authentically and empathetically.

The result? A more motivated team and remarkable organizational growth.

As leaders, the greatest investment we can make is in ourselves. Coaching isn’t just about better business outcomes—it’s about becoming the leader your team deserves.

Reflect on this: Who are you becoming as a leader? Are you empowering your team to thrive, or are you stuck in old patterns that no longer serve you?

Coaching can help you find the answers, unlock your potential, and transform your leadership journey.

My Success Story as A Leadership Coach

The beauty of being a coach is the ability to coach oneself.

I learned this 13 years back.

After a successful career in corporate HR, including heading HR for Bestseller Retail India, I decided to follow my passion.

In January 2013, I stepped into the uncharted world of Executive Coaching and Mentoring.

At the time, not many understood what coaching was or the transformational results it could bring to individuals, teams, and organizations.

With no mentor or godfather to guide me, every day presented new challenges.

Yet, the beauty of being a coach is the ability to coach oneself, and I applied that principle daily.

My first 100 hours of coaching were invaluable – I worked with clients from diverse walks of life, gaining clarity about my purpose and shaping my vision.

In mid-2014, my persistence bore fruit.

A former colleague from Etisalat DB Telecom, now in Ghana with Tech Mahindra, reached out.

After a detailed discussion on his challenges, we agreed to begin a leadership coaching engagement.

Here begins my Corporate Leadership Coaching JOURNEY!

Around the same time, an email from Sri Lanka changed my journey forever.

It was a Sunday evening when I received a message from a prominent business owner seeking my coaching services.

A quick call revealed that he was one of the top 10 richest Indians in Sri Lanka, managing a conglomerate of 19 diversified businesses.

Within 48 hours, I was on a flight to meet him.

Sitting across his desk, we discussed his aspirations and the challenges he faced as a leader.

Our coaching journey began, and the results were transformative.

As his mindset and leadership style evolved, he entrusted me to coach the CEOs of several of his businesses.

What started as one engagement grew into a five-year partnership. I was granted Sri Lankan residency to continue working closely with him and his leadership teams, a period that profoundly shaped my growth as a Leadership Coach.

The early days were tough – coaching was still a nascent field, and selling its value was a challenge.

In 2013, Many friends advised me to return to corporate life, but I held on to my belief in my vision.

Over time, that belief translated into reality.

Had I listened to others beliefs and not trusted on my potential, I wouldn’t have achieved my dreams.

Today, I celebrate 14 years of this fulfilling journey.

With over 500 clients, 6,000+ hours of coaching, and work spanning 15 countries, I remain committed to my purpose: Making the Best Better.

What leadership habit has shaped your journey? I would love to hear your thoughts below!

Business Decision Making – calculated versus impulsive

Minimize Mistakes With The Help of Business Coaching

The “bone-chilling” motor cross racer

Sitting at Starbucks one evening with a journalist friend I got an eyewitness account to a bone-chilling story. A certain motocross racer won a race about five years back. He won it with an injury. During the championship, he had a fall. He dislocated two fingers of his right foot and was off the plaster 4 days before the race. This limited his mobility to a bandage and support to walkabout.

The internet is filled with millions of similar stories. About, how ordinary individuals became heroes overnight. This display of a victory celebration witness is indeed rare. The used the last straw of energy to spend it expressing is happiness. After the race, the journalist went to congratulate him. He sat in a folding chair right next to his car. This racer who went ballistics sat calmly enjoying the evening breeze. Apart from pleasantries exchanged, he also left a lesson for the journalist –

Victory demands passion, passion demands dedication and dedication demands decision.

Deciding to race that day would have long term repercussions is what we may assume. Yes, he had the choice to be a spectator in the VIP stand. However, knowing the risks and making calculated decisions is what sent this racer to the podium.

Echoing this thought is a famous quote made by Ratan Tata is as follows:

I don’t believe in taking right decisions. I take decisions and then make them right.

There are much praise and debate about the origins of this phrase; however, before we digress here is a thought. The premise for this is the turnaround of JLR from a loss-making entity to a profitable arm of the current group. This is not the first automobile company acquired by the TATA Group. In the past, they have turned around the fortunes their own too. Today, the erstwhile “cabbies” are predominantly Tata Indicas. With time and technology, these numbers are shifting to other brands. However, it was this one model that not just the fight to the competition. It also opened up opportunities for a lot of skilled drivers. Jumping on this bandwagon were other individuals who seek to invest and multiply their savings over time.

Decision Making – History as an eyewitness

A decision, calculated or impulsive bears fruit. The resulting consequences are capable of turning the fortunes and fate of the stakeholders, not just the decision-maker. Empires have fallen and risen in the books of history. From blitzkrieg to tactical advanced warfare, the world has seen many leaders who had a part to play.

Business Decision Making

Business decision making has no room for impulsiveness. There are rare and exceptional risk-takers, however, at the helm is an individual taking a calculated risk. Just that the calculations were at a much faster pace. Impulsive decisions can on the downside have adverse effects, not just in business or career it has wrecked personal relationships. This has led to low morale at work thus affecting productivity.

On the other hand, a calculated decision analyses the risks involved versus the prospects. The viability of the project with its outliers allows the business to either proceed or abandon the project. Basis the outcome, a strategy is devised to precede keeping in line with the risks involved. There is always room for unforeseen circumstances. Making a decision requires that the business leader is at a sound mind so that the individual can do what is best for the business. Ensuring that the decision made is made right (as quoted by Ratan Tata) requires among other factors persistence. It was over time that the fortunes turned northward for the newly acquired JLR.

Business Decision Making and Coaching

A Business Coach or Entrepreneur Coach acts as a catalyst in the following ways:

  1. Become non judgemental
  2. Stay calm in difficult situations
  3. Instead of taking impulsive decision, you take logical thought through action
  4. You Break stereotype, Come out of your loneliness and limitations of thinking more creative
  5. Live fear-free and feel empowered

Change management – A tale of two Turtles

Change management – A tale of two Turtles

Change Management – Acceptance Of A Gift

1st April around midnight I get a call,” Hey come down, I have a gift for you”. The date itself witness to the fact of what one can expect. However, the caller on the other side refused to budge from the premises. Finally, I went down and met my friend. In his hand he had a basket, waiting for me for almost two hours.

An uncanny way to give a gift and that too on the first of April! Who would have imagined getting a pet on a day when the world is out to prank the living daylights out of you? So, I opened the basket and no bigger than the size of a soup spoon was this baby turtle all cute and cuddly in that basket. In the time that followed, six months fast forward I went to a pet shop and got another turtle.

It Takes Two To Turtle

It is over twelve years to the day of having both the turtles as part of the family. Whenever I share the story of how they both came into my life, it indeed is an adventurous journey. A story that concludes with peels of resonating laughter! In these twelve years, both not only grew, in the case of one of them I believe he is overgrown. The other one is pretty much the same size from the day he came home. A regular visit to the vet and routine tasks of feeding and bathing them is all it takes to turtle care.

“Moody Me”

As compared to other pets, turtles are zero maintenance. They are loners and enjoy being lonesome. In contrast to the other, the bigger one shares an emotional connect with me. My day starts with him knocking on the door with his shell beckoning time for his morning playtime. His day begins with basking under the shower to his heart’s content. He is unlike what I’ve read about turtles who like to be left to themselves. Upon return from a tour, it takes a day worth of cajoling to get him back to his playful self.

The other one is a loner and moody as can be. He does not mingle easily with visitors and likes to be to himself. He prefers to stay under the side cabinet – his personal space. Interestingly, this one has a taste for music and we at times see him “grooving to the beat”. Keeping him company in the other tub is the bigger, one when their tubs are flanked near each other during meals.

Change Management – Advice From A Domain Expert

All is well, until recently when a friend dropped by. A pet lover that he is – has a few dogs adopted by his family and four turtles. It was no surprise when we found that he and the smaller one became instant friends. In the discussion, he advised that both be kept in the early morning sun for a while. This was apparently good for their health. He recommended that the smaller one be kept as much as possible away from water as he could develop an infection.

Change Management – The Culture Shock

The next morning, the advice was implemented. The bigger one was kept in his tub in the sun while the smaller one got his tub sans the water. For both of them, it seemed like a culture shock! Indeed the schedule was turn around. The bigger one has been resisting this change and in his way of communicating has been “vocal” about it. The smaller one was noticed scrambling towards the shadows. He wanted to get away from the sun in his dry tub initially, however, he seems to be adapting to the change.

Just like them we humans too have a routine life and in time settle into our comfort zones. The paradigm shifts in our personal lives are easily adapted to. This is because somewhere it is a personal choice and somewhere a sacrifice. Nevertheless, we give in – after all, no pain, no gain.

We know from our own experience and from examples of individuals in our social circles that:

  • The changes made will enhance our prospects
  • Elevate our current state of being

“We are a social animal by nature. We seek attention and validation and hence any noticeable change is worth the effort.”

Social Networking In The Digital Age

Today as social as we are in our personal lives we have various mediums of networking in this era of the digital age. In the last 50 years, the world has moved from Telegram to Instagram and from slam book to Facebook. There are some in today’s generation who maintain connections the old fashioned way; they, however, are tuned in to the NET. Likewise, for working professionals, businesses and entrepreneurs, etc. we too have social networking channels that have become our personal space. It links us to each other while keeping us tuned in to the current trends of the MARKET.

We want to stay linked to the system and remain updated. This is because we want to ride the next big wave of growth that awaits us, don’t we? We are more than willing to jump off the surfboard of change when making a shift to another place. We know that we will have to make changes to our lifestyle for the better and go with it. Now, these changes do not come as often and not to all of us. Now, because it is a phenomenon we look forward to we are willing to ink the dotted line and then worry about the fine print.

When The Other Side Is On “This Side”

Let us turn the tables now:

  • What if this shift comes within our current jobs?
  • What if overnight it takes us out of our current work schedule – comfort zone?

For the greater good in the name of resource optimization, we are deputed on a different project. Unlike the current setup, this may not necessarily be an easy one.

Just like the turtles we too have an immediate reaction:

  1. We resist the change and voice it out like the bigger one
  2. We begin to adapt to the new workflow in time to come

Adapting To Change Management

Be it mother nature or business operations, change is constant. Anyone who adapts to the change is not only assimilated by the system. The individual is also elevated from the current job position to a higher designation. Promotions do not always come easy. The ability to increase one’s scalability rapidly is what takes the individual up the ladder of success. The question that I leave you with is – “Am I ready for change management?”
